General Pre-Season Check Ups And Preventative Exercises/Lifestyle Choices

At Health Space, most clients present to us only after having sustained an injury. As Physiotherapists, while it is our responsibility to provide them with the after care they need, we also hope to be able to educate them and prevent them from harming themselves in the first place.

The February – March period marks the time of the year that many sports such as Netball, Rugby, Tennis, AFL, Soccer and Hockey begin their pre-season training. Irrespective of one’s level of sport or athleticism, a pre-season screening for is imperative to ensuring identification of any current injury, imbalances or predisposing factors that may result in injury, and therefore time spent on the sidelines. A Physical or Functional Movement Assessment may include analysis or identification of:

  1. Gait and movement patterns
  2. Current or previous injuries
  3. Posture
  4. Sport Specific testing
  5. Muscle length and strength
  6. Joint Movement

After getting over the hustle and bustle of the festive season and activities of the Summer months, it is also a great time for anyone in the general population to gain an awareness of any postural abnormalities, or general lifestyle choices they hold that are detrimental to their physical mobility and thereby, their health.

So if you, or someone you know is about to begin their sport season or is planning to commence a new form of exercise, a Functional Movement Assessment is imperative for all athletes. A Musculoskeletal assessment will also benefit anyone in the general population in prematurely addressing and therefore preventing, potential injuries.
